London: W Richardson in the Strand; also J Robson in New Bond Street, and N Conant in Fleet Street, 1780 A fair copy of the 1st English edition of Uno von Troil's account of his visit to Iceland with Joseph Banks and Dr Solander in 1772. It was first published in Uppsala in 1777 and the English version is taken from the German translation of 1779. Dr Von Troil studied divinity, oriental and northern languages and antiquities. He was introduced to Dr Banks when he was staying in England. The book is in the form of correspondence and contains a wealth of observation from the visit. It is bound in tree calf, which may be contemporary, and the spine has highly decorative gilt compartments and title label. The spine is splitting at the hinges and is held by the ties and by reinforcement at the front endpaper joint. There is scuffing and wear, particularly to corners. There is a pencil signature to the fep. Contents: title; contents; introduction; catalogue of writers on Iceland (xxvi); folding map; text pp 1-400 with frontispiece bound in at p 257 (next to the relevant text section). There is some browning to the side of the title and to the final leaf, and the map has a small repair at the attachment. Contents very clean with the occasional light mark.

Description:
LONDON : J Pemberton, D Browne, 1732 A VG copy of this rare and interesting work by John Macky (published anonymously). John Macky (d 1726) was a Scotsman and a government agent or spy. According to sources he informed the British of James II's intention to invade England in 1792, and his network of spies was vital to the discovery in February and March 1708 of Jacobite plans for the invasion of Scotland. This book, in the form of a series of letters, is written with considerable knowledge and authority. He travelled extensively in the region, dying finally in Rotterdam in 1726. This copy is newly rebound in half leather and marbled boards with raised bands to spine, gilt tooling and gilt title label. Internally, the contents comprise: half title; advertisement for 'A Journey through England', title page, Introduction with decorative headpiece, initial capitals, and decorative tailpiece (pp V-XXX), publisher's advert (2pp), errata (1 pge), letters with decorative head and tailpieces… Read More

Description:
London: Jonah Bowyer, 1717 A good copy of the first English edition (published one year after the French 1st publication) with 37 fine engraved plates, maps and charts as called for. Frezier was a French royal military engineer, and was asked to undertake a voyage to Spanish possessions in South America to study fortifications and to chart the western coast. The first section covers his voyage from France round Cape Horn and the second gives detail of his voyage along the coast of Chile and Peru. His observations were valuable and he gives interesting accounts of local people and customs. Of interest now (particularly for those with golfing and strawberry eating interests) are his depictions of a sport that looks like golf and his discovery of strawberries which he introduced to France. Frezier made some geographical errors which Halley (of comet fame) corrects in this edition.
In contemporary panelled calf which has been expertly rebacked to provide a newer spine with raised bands and title label.… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for Dan. Browne, and Lockyer Davis, 1753 A good copy of the 4th edition of Martin Martin's account of his visit to St Kilda in 1697 (first published in 1698). Martin Martin lived on Skye and was a gaelic speaker. He decided to visit and study the western isles of Scotland to record both the land and its culture and natural history. Although Martin's account was mocked by some, particularly because he was considered too believing of local tales, it was much read and reprinted. This copy is in a probably later 1800's half leather binding with marbled boards. The spine has blind stamped decoration and gilt compartments with leather title label to spine. It sound and clean with some rubbing at joints, edges and corners and a little scuffing. There is the armorial bookplate of Edward Herbert, Earl of Powis to the front pastedown, and some marking to the endpapers suggesting that a cover was stuck down over the book at some point. Contents: initial blank; folding plate of 2 birds… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Description:
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
