About This Item
New York: Carl H. Pforzheimer, 1926. Limited Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Slip Case . 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. This limited edition 155 copies this is #119 are letterers written by a governess, Elizabeth Hitchener, who lived with Shelley his wife Harriet and his sister-in-law in 1812. The domicile relationship lasted a brief five months and Shelley is credited with destroying this friendship, and giving her a lifetime one hundred pound per year lifetime severance. What is that all about? There are twelve letters and a fine forward by Shelley biographer Walter Edwin Peck. The book was privately printed by Carl H. Pforzheimer and his friends. This very fine internally clean, unread book is printed on hand made paper and is finely bound in bright floral cloth over boards. There is a very fine near flawless slipcase and the book is wrapped in original tissue which has only minor chipping at extremities. There is a bookplate of a former owner on front paste down. This is a very fine and complete addition to any serious Shelley collector's library.
