This is the second impression, with corrigenda, of the first volume of the Pilgrim edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens (first published in 1965), for which Mrs Madeline House was awarded the Rose Mary Crawshay prize of the British Academy. She had taken over the editing after the death of her husband, Humphrey House, in 1955, and was later joined by Mr Graham Storey, Fellow of Trinity Hall, Cambridge (now University Reader), and subsequently by Mrs Kathleen Tillotson, Professor (now Emeritus) in the University of London. They have continued since her death, in 1978. Although Dickens was only 27 when this first volume closes at the end of 1839, he was already a husband and father; and had already published Sketches by Boz, Pickwick, Oliver Twist, and Nicholas Nickleby, besides a mass of journalism.
