King was imprisoned for participating in nonviolent demonstrations against segregation. Mimeographed copies of the letter were originally circulated, and papers such as the New York Times declined to print it. However, within days, several papers ran excerpts of the letter without King's consent, and shorty after the American Friends Service Committee received permission from King to publish this here first separate edition.
