About This Item

Athens, GA: University Of Georgia Press, 1997. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. Athens, GA: University Of Georgia Press, 1997. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 32 pages. The author's classic short story, fully illustrated. Presented as a keepsake of one of Barry Lopez's finest short stories. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a University Press. Presents Barry Lopez's "Lessons From The Wolverine". The second collaboration between writer Barry Lopez and watercolor artist Tom Pohrt, preceded by their dazzling illustrated book, "Crow And Weasel" (1990). "A young man journeys through the Arctic wilderness to find a family of wolverine and learn more about their mysterious power. At the time the story opens, the narrator is working as an airplane mechanic in Northeast Alaska. Long sensitive to wild animals, he feels drawn to wolverines through his dreams. The young man enters the dream landscape of two wolverines, and receives from them the first lessons he will use to shape his adult life. Barry Lopez's story, infused with gentle magic, shows how one man comes to experience the wondrous power of animals and to understand his place in the natural world in a new way. Tom Pohrt's watercolor illustrations add vivid dimension to the story, bringing to life the land, people, and animals the young man encounters on his journey" (Publisher's blurb). Barry Lopez is widely regarded as the contemporary heir of the canonical "Nature Writing" tradition whose pantheon includes such figures as Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Rachel Carson, and Aldo Leopold. That he is, substantively and stylistically. He is also a brilliant storyteller/fictionist, in a way that his great predecessors are not, and as such equals the achievement of a near-coeval in (the slightly older) Peter Matthiessen. Barry Lopez died on December 25, 2020, Christmas Day, at the height of the pandemic year. An absolute "must-have" title for Barry Lopez and Tom Pohrt collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Barry Lopez and Tom Pohrt. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Barry Lopez's signature is one of the most beautiful, old-fashioned in the best way, among all contemporary writers. This title is an illustrated book classic. This is one of few such double-signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws because they have been pored over or are subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare double-signed copy thus. Finalist of the National Book Award in 1978 for "Of Wolves And Men". Winner of the National Book Award in 1986 for "Arctic Dreams". One of the greatest American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER BARRY LOPEZ TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0820319279.
