From the blurb: "pour le témoignage historique qu'elles offrent, [cette volume] se limite aussi aux époques romane et gothique, celles de la formation et de la maturité picturales françaises, entre la fin du Xe et le début du xvie siècle : remonter plus haut dans le temps obligeait à passer en revue l'ensemble de la peinture occidentale, que de larges courants parcouraient toute, débordant les frontières de la France actuelle. Ruinée par les destructions et les luttes qui marquent la chute de la dynastie carolingienne, la peinture renait en France grâce aux apports voisins branchés sur les souvenirs précarolingiens et carolingiens : ceux d'Angleterre, des pays mosans, de l'Allemagne des Ottons, des riverains de la Méditerranée héritiers de l'Antiquité et de Byzance; brisant le cadre géographique, le chapitre roman tente de distinguer ces apports partout où ils exercent leur action et de montrer comment ils ont contribué, sous des caractères généraux communs, à la diversité romane. L'époque gothique est celle de la maitrise : toujours ouverte, et elle le restera, aux influences extérieures, la France du xine siècle crée un art original; Paris, tête intellectuelle de l'Europe d'alors, donne à l'enluminure européenne son élan et devient au début du xve siècle l'un des centres où se forge la peinture moderne.
