About This Item
Bracken Books, London, 1984. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Good. A chronological table from the creation of the world to the fall of the Roman Empire in the West, and in the East. Dark red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the back strip. Illustrated dustwrapper with orange and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. A facsimile edition of the work that was published in 1865. Four over two years this work has been the reference of journalists, inspiration for poets and playwrights. But, its prime usefulness in today's world is for " ... the general reader who, whether coming across classical references in Shakespeare or Robert Graves, Shelley or T. S. Eliot, or simply curious to know the origins and relationships of such characters as Aphrodite or Dionysus, Achilles or Poseidon, needs to have at hand a single comprehensive work which will not only answer the simple question of identity, but locate that name in its network of chronological and personal links." Rubbing of the book corners with softening and rubbing of the back strip edges. Some marks to the book panels. Light age toning and a few handling marks to the text block edges with very faint offset tanning, handling marks and foxing to the end pages. Some creasing of the dustwrapper edges and panels and there is a small tear 5 inches from the bottom edge measuring 1 inch. The laminate has started to lift along the spine gutter region. A previous owner has supported the back strip edges with clear contact plastic. first edition by this publisher. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [4], V - XV, [1] 736 pages,.
