About This Item

Publisher Not Specified, 1855-01-01. Hardcover. Good. 1855 [Religious Tract Society] (London), 7 x 10 1/8 inches tall x 1 1/2 inches thick hardbound, marbled paper covered boards over leather spine and tips, gilt lettering and design to spine, marbled page edges, brown endpapers, 828 pp. Covers rubbed and edgeworn, especially along spine and tips. A bit of flaking to the leather. Age toning to paper. Otherwise, apart from a few instances of marginal foxing, a very good copy - clean and unmarked. All of the weekly issues from 1855, with each issue led by a large engraving and consisting of serialized fiction of a self-uplifting nature, usually anonymous, and articles on popular science, history, biography and poetry of a similar nature, usually with a handful of other engraved illustrations mixed in. This fourth volume of issues was edited by William Haig Miller (1812-1891), and though the illustrations are also unattributed, French-born British cartoonist and author George Du Maurier (1834-1896), known for his cartoons in the periodical 'Punch,' and English artist, illustrator and engraver John Gilbert (1817-1897) were the most frequent contributing illustrators. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~UUU~ Serials in this volume include 'Struggles in Life,' 'The Downward Path,' 'A French Soldier's Adventure,' 'The First Ship to St. Petersburg,' 'Marriage; or, The Bachelor in Search of a Wife' and 'I Quite Forgot!
