About This Item

The present volume contains the Laws of Toro (Leyes de Toro) in Latin as well as Antonio Gómez's extensive commentary also in Latin. Written in the city of Toro, Spain in 1505, the year after the death of Queen Isabella I of Castile, the Laws of Toro consist of 83 precepts or laws. Covering such issues as inheritance, marriage, and obligations to the royal crown, they guaranteed the social dominance of the families of the high nobility.

Antonio Gómez (born after 1500; died before 1572) was a Spanish jurist and priest. After completing his studies at the University of Salamanca, where he subsequently taught law, he became the Archpriest of Toledo, then the richest diocese in Christendom. His principal work is this commentary on the Leyes de Toro. First published in 1552, Gómez's work has become the most important source for that area of Spanish law.

Binding solid with some loss of the outside of the leather. Atractive and vivid marbled endpapers. On good qualiity paper stock with some water staining. All in all a very respectible copy of this important book.
