London: Folio Society 2007. (Hardcover in slipcase) 512pp. Near fine, no dust jacket. Black half-leather with illustrated covers in a near fine black slipcase. Top edge stained green, frontispiece, illustrations, sources. There is a previous owner's blind stamp on the title page and the slipcase is slightly bumped and rubbed. "The Grail is a mysterious and haunting image which crosses the borders of fiction and spirituality, and which, for eight centuries, has been a recurrent ideal in Western literature. In the last century, it has passed into ordinary language as a metaphor for the ultimate or unattainable, and we talk of the 'holy grail' of this or that science or lifestyle without really thinking at all of the object whose name we take in vain" - from the Introduction.
