New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1858 Exterior Good-/Interior VG. Author's Preface to this edition dated 1853; this revised edition copyright 1854 (". . .introducing a mass of corrections in detail, and a considerable number of additions. . . [:]some pages on Christianity at the end of Lecture XVI, and the notes placed as an Appendix at the end of the volume, on various works of French masters. . .). This Appendix translated by N.E.S.A. Hamilton of the British Museum. Eight pages of advertisements for D. Appleton & Co. publications in rear. Cousin (1792-1867) was a prolific French philosopher and educator who promoted views on what he called "Eclecticism." For a time his ideas were embraced by the New England transcendentalists. Apparently this book was produced in 31 editions over 90 years. Heavy rubbing to cover corners, with boards exposed; cloth at upper and lower spine deteriorated and partially chipped away; 1"-2" split in cloth at upper and lower spine gutters. Spine sunned; tiny black spot stain at spine title. Prior owner name at upper front endpaper; another prior owner name in pencil on title page. Interior otherwise clean, tight, and solid.
