Octavo, full leather binding, elaborate crest stamped in gilt upper board, gilt decoration and title spine, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, b&w illus, pp xxxix, 191. Spine faded and rubbed, fading top area of boards, front board starting. School prize plate front endpaper. Some foxing blank front endpapers and prelim pages, but text and illustrations clean. Good condition. Narrative poems recounting heroic episodes in early Roman history: the poems were immensely popular. This edition has 41 illustrations by John Reinhard Weguelin (1849 - 1927) the English painter, known for his neo-classical style and his dedpictions of ancient Greece and Rome. Leather.
