A deluxe Franklin Library edition presenting "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) Appearing in 1826, the author wrote this novel as part of his "Leatherstocking Series" of 5 novels, each of which feature his Natty Bumppo character. It is centered around events in the French and Indian War, and set in upstate New York. Includes the eye-catching color illustrations by N. C. Wyeth. An entry in the publisher's 100 Greatest Masterpieces of American Literature series, issued in conjunction with the Bicentennial of the American Revolution. One of an unspecified number in this limited edition. Franklin Library Notes from the Editors booklet is included. --- Bound in full tan bonded leather covers with four raised bands on spine. Spine titling, elaborate decorations to covers and spine, and textblock edges all in bright gilt. Interior leaves printed on high-quality papers. Synopsis
The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 by James Fenimoore Cooper is the second and best-known book of his Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy. Like the rest of the books in the series, the story follows the adventures of Natty Bumppo, nicknamed “Hawkeye” by his Native American friends. Set in 1757 in the American wilderness that would become New York State, The Last of the Mohicans takes place during the Seven Years' War (known in America as the French and Indian War). The book is widely read in American Literature courses, particularly in discussions of westward expansion and Native American assimilation, although Cooper himself was considered sympathetic towards Native Americans.
