About This Item

[Chiselhurst], [1872]. The photograph would have been taken at the same time as the photograph called "the last photograph of Napoleon III" taken while in exile in Chiselhurst, England. 6.5 by 4.25 inches, original Carte de Visite mounted photograph. A well preserved image that shows very handsomely. There is a bit of wear at the edges of the mounting board. AN ORIGINAL CARTE DE VISITE PHOTOGRAPH OF CHARLES-LOUIS BONAPARTE, EMPEROR NAPOLEON III. This is a photograph of him taken while living in exile in England about six months prior to his death. It is likely that it was taken during the same sitting as the "last photograph" as he is wearing the same clothing with accouterments as in that well known photograph.
The nephew and heir of Napoleon Bonaparte, Napoleon III was the Emperor of the French from 1852 to 1870 and, as Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, the President of France from 1848 to 1852. He was the only president of the French Second Republic and the founder of the Second French Empire. He was the first head of state of France to hold the title of President. He would die an exile in England, where he was considered a guest of Queen Victoria and became a fixture of English high-society.
