About This Item
London: George Newnes, Limited, 1899 . Cloth. Very Good. 10" by 7". Not Stated. An early edition of Chaillu's travel journal around Northern Europe with folding maps and illustrations. Early edition of The Land of the Midnight Sun: Summer and Winter Journeys through Sweden, Norway, Lapland, and Northern Finland, by Paul B. Du Chaillu. In the original publisher's decorative cloth binding. With descriptions of the inner life of the people, their manners and customs, the primitive antiquities, etc. With a large folding map to the rear, a folding plate as the frontispiece, and illustrations throughout the text. Collated, complete. Paul Belloni Du Chaillu was a French-American traveller, zoologist, and anthropologist. He is best known as the first European to confirm the existence of gorillas and the Pygmy people of Central Africa. He also did lots of research into the prehistory of Scandinavia. With gilt to the front board, spine, and fore edge. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart. There is some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The front hinge is strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with the odd spot. Very Good
