About This Item

Edinburgh; Canongate Publishing, 1985., 1985. Hard Cover. Definitive Edition (reprint). Signed, numbered and dated by the author to the front free endpaper. Octavo, pp. [8], 561, [7]. No. 659 of 1000 copies. Publisher's black cloth with gilt titles to spine and wrap around gilt quotation to upper and lower boards in unclipped pictorial dust-jacket with rare, original glassine dust-jacket covering. Fine book in near fine dust-jacket. Very light edgewear to the glassine dust-jacket protector with very small area of loss and a little staining to rear panel but in very good condition. The 'definitive' edition of the Author's first book in an edition of 1,000 copies only. Hailed as the most influential Scottish novel of the second half of the 20th century it was on the basis of Lanark that Anthony Burgess called Gray the best Scottish novelist since Walter Scott. This definitive edition was reprinted in 1985. Scarce signed, especially so in the original fragile glassine wrapper.

Synopsis

Lanark, a modern vision of hell set in the disintegrating cities of Unthank and Glasgow, tells the interwoven stories of Lanark and Duncan Thaw. A work of extraordinary, playful imagination, it conveys a profound message, both personal and political, about humankind's inability to love, and yet our compulsion is to go on trying. First published in 1981, Lanark immediately established Gray as one of Britain's leading writers, compared with - among others - Dante, Blake, Joyce, Orwell, Kafka, Huxley and Lewis Carroll. This new edition includes an introduction by William Boyd as well as the author's fascinating addendum, the 'Tailpiece' (2001).
