UK,slim 12mo p/back 1st edn.VG.No owner inscrptn and no price removal from front card cover.Publisher's slightly grubbed,but sharp-cornered,glossy,pink andwhite horizontally banded front cover with black+orange lettering and orange+white Penguin colophon and orange price to top 2/3rd's white band and a vertical,black border-edged individual b/w cartoon illustration of the lovers - extending over both the upper white and lower pink backgrounds, in the lower 1/3rd's pink background band,orange slightly concave spine/backstrip with b/w letters+publisher's colophon and some darkening to approx. the top half of same and front-facing edge of gutter's fold/crease with minimal rubbing and reciprocal colour paper loss,rear cover with orange background to 3 verses and a halftone [a printing process using patterns of dots to create an image with the appearance of colours and shades but the individual halftone dots are a continuous tone,meaning each dot was one unvaried colour] author/illustrator's portrait photograph a diagonal corner tip crease to bottom corner.Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks,tears or splits present.Both top+fore-edges slightly aged/toned but without foxing/spotting or other blemish; contents bright,tight,clean,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.UK,slim 12mo p/back 1st edn,128pp [unpaginated] includes author's potted biography with blank reverse,b/w cartoon vignette illustrated title page half-title with blank reverse,b/w cartoon vignetted title page,remaining pages with individual cartoons - majority with text captioning.
Described hard,but honestly and fairly,still an acceptable example for the collector.
Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age and nature,i.e. a p/back,and even internally,the book is also in an acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation.It is only the exterior faults described that prevent a higher grading.
Raymond Peynet (November 16th,1908 – January 14th,1999) was a French cartoonist who was born in Paris.A cartoonist, illustrator and lithographer,he is known for having created the couple of lovers in 1942 which he represented on many mediums,including ceramics, posters,jewellery, postcards,and even postage stamps.In addition to numerous illustrations of books,Peynet also focused his work on the production of advertising posters and in the 1980s lithographs representing lovers in various scenes and etchings representing "the signs of the zodiac".
