Decorated cloth, lettered in gold at the spine and in black at the upper board, with gilt- and black stamped illustrations. With patterned endpapers, a frontispiece, one double-spread map, and thirty-one captioned plates of engravings. Cloth a little bruised at the backstrip ends and with a single tiny nick. Free endpapers browned. School prize plate to the front pastedown, and the motif of the same school gilt-stamped to the rear board, over the publisher's blind-stamped imprint. A very good copy. A handsome early reprint of the author's first book..

Bright Gilt Central School Badge on front illustrated with a Golden Eagle. Gilt Armorial Bearing on the back. Endpapers and all page edges Marbled. Frontis illustrated with " the Lady Alice Shooting the Rapids". 31 other full-page B&W illustrations. Very interesting account of African Exploration, in 3 Parts; The Nile, The Congo, and The Zambesi. Illustrations include; "Caravan crossing the Nubian Desert", "Sir Samuel and Lady Baker on the March", "Murchison Falls", "Stanley on the March", "Burton & Speke on the Tanganyika" & "Game on the Zambesi". 275 Pages, 560g, 7 1/2" Tall. Prize Bookplate with School's Armorial Bearing on Endpaper, dated 1891 Fine crack to leather down right side of spine and a small triangular piece of leather missing at top left of spine. Hinges sound & Binding firm. Gift inscription on blank preliminary page, dated 1940. Pages in nice, clean condition. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall

With 32 steel engraved illustrations in plates (some double page), including a map. Very Good. Clean covers with slight dulling to spine gilt and some rubbing to edges. Pages generally very clean, some dulling to closed edges (marbled) and light foxing to prelims and blanks at end.

Hardcover. 12mo. 18cm, third edition, 275p., with 32 illustrations including frontis, double page map, bound in contemporary full brown morocco, blind ruled raised bands, gilt titles, blind ruled borders on the boards, gilt School Prize Binding on the cover, gilt inner dentelles, prize presentation bookplate on marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, Signed Prize Binding "Bickers Sons, Leicester,Sqr". In Fine Condition ~ Scottish journalist and writer, John Geggie (1848 1937), wrote several travel books (also Himalayas & Russian Empire) but was noted mainly for his writings on Edinburgh. This book is in three parts: The Nile, Congo & Zambezi. An attractively bound book in signed bindings " Bickers & Son, Leicester Sqr.". The school crest on front is Owen's Grammar School (est. 1613).
