About This Item

The First UK printing published by Chatto & Windus, London in 1960. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with gilt titling to the spine. Light toning to the spine tips. Light toning and spotting to the text-block. Some light offsetting to the prelims and red end-paper. Free from inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Some light edge-wear with a few nicks and small closed tears. Light rubbing to the corners with a small area of loss to the lower front spine fold. The Una Bishop wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The author has signed her name to the dedication page and has corrected the dedicatee from 'Janice' to 'Jamie' as she often did when signing this particular book. The author clarified this when she pointed out in a letter to John Baxter, the bibliophile that there is a 'curious little flaw' in the first edition of this book : 'There's a mistake in the dedication', which reads 'For Pat.and in memory of Janice'. All later editions read 'Jamie, who was my father'. A secretarial 'blunder', which caused a terrific row at the time'. The other dedicatee 'Pat' being her mother ( who 'did not approve of the subject matter of the book').' The author's acclaimed debut novel. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
