Leiden: Johannem vander Linden, Jun, 1722. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition of the Duker edition. Large 8vo (8 x 5 inches) in slightly later tree calf, lvery good, light wear and rubbing, spine label with craquelure and hard to read, contents clean and bright, engraved title page, letterpress title page in red and black, unusually very modern looking but clearly 18th century endpapers, folding map of Imperial Rome, 960 (119 pp. unnumbered index) 52 pp. This historical work on Rome was written by the historian probably about 100 AD and covers the founding of Rome up to the time of Augustus. Although often historically wrong, it was still widely admired and highly regarded and survived as a textbook of Roman history up through the 19th century. A handsome binding with "Praemium / Virtute / Partum " in gilt on front cover, small gilt sunburst on rear cover, possibly a school binding, but no inscriptions or other identifying marks. Text is typographically very handsome and easy to read.
