Includes an introduction; essay, Modern Art and Political Discourse: An Encounter with Boris Lurie; an essay, Boris Lurie: A Life in the Camps; and the Exhibition History. "The exhibition, developed in cooperation with Boris Lurie Art Foundation, New York, under the curatorial direction of Gertrude Stein, gallerist and Chairman of the Board, Boris Lurie Art Foundation, will show all of Lurie's artistic stages. Starting with the body of work created shortly after his release from Buchenwald concentration camp, the paintings and collages of the NO!art movement as well as the late sculptural works are featured in this retrospective exhibition. Boris Lurie, who was born in Leningrad in 1924 and grew up in Riga, survived both ghetto and concentration camp. Art provided him with a means of escaping the silence of victims. His outlook on life defined the NO!art movement, in which Lurie was the central figure. This movement was founded in New York in 1959 and cast a critical eye on society and politics. Lurie's anger and moral outrage about past and present evils are reflected in his coarse style of his work.
