G. P. Putnam’s Sons, N.Y., 1907. First Edition (shown). Hardcover. VG+/--. 7 1/2 x 5 x 1 1/2. NON SMOKING STORE. My listing includes PHOTO OF ACTUAL BOOK for sale. VERY GOOD PLUS. No dust jacket as issued or missing. Sewn binding. Boards and spine are green cloth, lettering is gilt on spine and front. Back cover has slightly bent corners, some edge wear and minor marks from adjacent book on shelf, but no rips or stains. Spine has some edge wear all four sides but no rips, is clean and quite bright, has a few small creases top and bottom. Front cover is same as back cover with a few marks from what looks like black sealing wax. Page edges are tinted, as issued, slightly sunned. Binding is a bit loose. Inside front and back covers have a bit of age darkening, also ink stamp “Property of the B.C. Mountaineering Club”. On ffep is attached the Rules of the B.C. Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 â€" 1913) was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, biologist and illustrator He is best known for independently conceiving the theory of evolution through natural selection His paper on the subject was jointly published with some of Darwin's writings in 1858This prompted Darwin to publish On the Origin of Species Like Darwin, Wallace did extensive fieldwork; first in the Amazon, and then in the Malay Archipelago, where he identified the faunal divide now termed the Wallace Line, which separates the Indonesian archipelago into two distinct parts: a western portion in which the animals are largely of Asian origin, and an eastern portion where the fauna reflect Australasia This 2 volume set is the second edition, 1869, of his seminal work in the Malay Archipelago Includes half-titles, and one folding color map only (of 2, lacking the Physical Map in vol1), wood-engraved plates, other maps… Read More

London: John Murray, 1869. Fifth (Tenth Thousand). Good. Considered one of the most important books every published, any edition (there were six) of The Origin of Species that was published during Darwin's lifetime (he died in 1882) is exceptionally sought after, since the print runs were relatively small for such a significant work Only 10,000 copies were printed cumulatively through this fifth edition (which was for only 2,000 copies) This copy was custom bound in full leather with gilt tooling, but the spine and front board are loose and the back board has detached But the hinge breaks are clean and should be repairable The text block is very sound however, and except for the hinge detachments, the leather binding is in relatively good condition There is modest foxing on the ffeps, but otherwise the contents are in very good condition with only minor age toning The edges are marbled, as are the endpapers.

The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication, 2 volumes, 1st edition, 2nd issue, 1868, letterpress illustrations, 32pp publisher's catalogue dated April 1867 at end of volume 1, 2pp publisher's list at end of volume 2. Original green cloth with gilt titles on the spines and blind-stamped design on all covers.  Minor professional restoration apparent with new endpapers (matching original) and discreet spine reinforcement.  Some light spotting at front and rear, pages in volume 2 mostly uncut.   Ink name of a previous owner at top of ffep of volume 1.   Slight foxing on endpapers only.  Text otherwise shows just slight age toning, with no other marks or damage. Large 8vo (Freeman 878 Second issue copy with one-line errata to volume I and no errata to volume II), 411 + 32 p ad, 486 + 2 p ads pp.
