About This Item

New York: Random House, 1969. Near Fine condition (boards a touch faded at edge, but less than usual) in a gorgeous, Very Fine Dust Jacket. No tears. No fading. No chips, runs or errors. Protected by a removable Brodart sleeve. The author's second book. "A novel of suspense." This baseball-themed, spy thriller is set in Miami and Castro's Cuba. During a crucial part of the pennant race, Gil Rolfe is sent to extricate a baseball team's star pitcher, Chombo Herrera, who has gone home to Havana to see his girlfriend, and now cannot get back. An attractive copy of a book tough-to-find in collectible condition. McCue p. 115: calls this an "Adult mystery." From the Dust Jacket: "If asked to supply his own epitaph, Gil Rolfe likely would have suggested: The Best Damn Solitaire Player in the World. He was almost completely his own creation, including his name. He had overcome both heredity and environment and had done it without help and, at times, against active opposition. He had learned young that the world didn't care whether he survived or perished. And he resolved to beat the world with its own deck. Indifference was his religion, detachment his philosophy. In the vernacular of his society, Gil Rolfe was known as a man who never lost his cool." Keywords: Baseball novel. CIA. Cuba.. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover.
