About This Item
Sixth Mike Hammer mystery. Basis for the 1955 American film noir produced and directed by Robert Aldrich. Starring Ralph Meeker and featuring Maxine Cooper and Cloris Leachman appearing in their feature film debuts. "The author's great popularity rests on the ease with which he mixes familiar elements- sex, sentiment, violence- without giving them any particular force or flavor. His numerous stories have the speed of a shallow stream and are almost indistinguishable. One good point: the sex is usually tender and friendly, not sadistic or hostile, and it offsets the smashing of skulls. No detection." BARZUN & TAYLOR 1955; HUBIN p.385.
Synopsis
A beautiful woman's cold-blooded murder has the mark of the Mafia. Although warned to stay away, Hammer won't stop until he gets revenge.
