Red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles and illustration to the back strip. Sophie Barrington Ward finds herself without a husband and two children to look after. Her friends begged her to go to safety, but she opts to stay in India – albeit in Kashmir. She settles in a small cottage surrounded by flowers and herbs, living frugally and peacefully with her neighbours. But, her coming causes turmoil amongst her neighbours as the villages compete fiercely for her patronage. This has catastrophic consequences when her cook makes a drastic bid to secure his position .... Minor softening and rubbing of the back strip edges with rubbing of the book corners and a little too the panels. Fading of the back strip.
