About This Item

New York: The Penguin Press, 2008. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Good. xiii, [1], 256, [2] pages. Illustrations. Appendix on the Anglo-French Entente. Notes. Bibliography. Index. DJ has tear at bottom of front at spine. The author was a Professor at Boston University and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He was a prolific author of articles and books. This seminal work provides new perspective on both King Edward the Seventh and President Roosevelt. It reveals how, at the Algeciras Conference of 1906, the two worked together to address concerns over the ill-tempered and power-hungry Kaiser Wilhelm II. At Algeciras, the United States and major European powers allied with Britain, defeating Germany's attempt at leading European Hegemony. The conference resulted in an isolation of Germany and set the groundwork for the forging of the Allied forces. This interaction between the two English-speaking leaders resulted over time in building the 'special relationship, between their two countries, as well as a rapprochement between Britain and France. This work is an intimate study of two extraordinary figures who rose to be recognized as international leaders. The author's character driven narrative sheds new light on the early events that so significantly impacted the course of the century.

Synopsis

An intimate look at two extraordinary figures and their secret collaboration?one that turned the alliance structure of the political world upside down In this character-driven study, acclaimed historian and bestselling author David Fromkin reveals how two colorful figures?Theodore Roosevelt and Edward the Seventh? assumed leadership of the English-speaking world at the beginning of the twentieth century. As human beings, the two men could hardly have been more different. Edward, a lover of fine food, drink, beautiful women, and the pleasure-seeking culture of Paris, had previously been regarded as nothing more than a playboy. Across the Atlantic, Theodore Roosevelt, the aristocrat from Manhattan and self-made cowboy, would rise above his critics to become one of the nation?s most beloved presidents. Together, they wrote the agenda for the North Atlantic democracies of the twentieth century.
