About This Item

Edinburgh: Edmonston and Douglas , 1869. Original dark blue cloth covers scuffed and rubbed; inner hinges starting; small pasted library label at base of spine with upper spine chipped; bookplate of The Minnesota Historical Society on front paste-down, which is beginning to separate. Binding is reasonably tight. Glennie was a barrister and a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. This book was apparently a part of a larger series of essays, though none other are present here. This book was apparently the first installment. There is a small dedication signature on the top of the title page, dated 1872. There are 140 pp of text, followed by the "First Report" of the Chaucer Society (4 pp) including the current membership list, followed by 20 pp of advertisements. There is a printed Erratum on the bottom of the title page, indicating an engraver's error. This is apparently a very early (first?) lecture for the Chaucer Society, dealing with the historical and geographical elements of the legend of King Arthur. This includes lists of old place-names, topographical details, and includes a map (original color with routes) by J. Bartholomew bound in and titled: "The North" in the Sixth Century or Arthurian Scotland to illustrate Mr. Suart Glennies Journeyings. Modern place-names are indicated parenthetically. The double-page map image measures 7.75x8.75 inches, and is tipped-in. This is an uncommon book, with the early information pertaining to the Chaucer Society.. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

About The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books

The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books is owned and operated by Joel & Deborah Kovarsky. We first opened in 1998, but have had a decades-old interest in old maps, books, and paper, stemming from a comparable long-standing interest in how knowledge is used. Our business is run via the internet. We do not run an open shop, however we do welcome visitors by appointment only. Before attempting a visit, please contact us. We are a specialty business, dealing in antiquarian maps and related books (atlases, history of cartography, selected reference books, etc.). Please feel free to contact us for specific inquiries.
