About This Item

New York: Lion Books, [1952]., 1952. First edition. First edition. PBO. Lion 99. Color pictorial wrapper. A trace of wear at spine edges and a minor dent across top page edges, with a few light reader's creases to the front cover, else a near fine copy. The first of 26 paperback original crime novels written by Thompson between 1952-1973, and one of the most brilliant narratives of the criminal psyche ever put on paper. Lou Ford is a deputy sheriff in a small West Texas town. Lou has a "sickness" he's held under control for 15 years, but now he's afraid it is about to break out. And when it does, everyone watch out! In our view one of the best hard-boiled novels ever written. One of the most brilliant narratives of the criminal psyche ever put on paper. A classic of the genre. The basis for two notable film adaptations; the 1976 version starring Stacey Keach and Susan Tyrrell, and the brutal, well-executed Michael Winterbottom adaptation of 2010 that starred Casey Afleck, Jessica Alba, and Kate Hudson.

Synopsis

(1906 - 1977) James Meyers Thompson was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma. He began writing fiction at a very young age, selling his first story to True Detective when he was only fourteen. Thompson eventually wrote twenty-nine novels, all but three of which were published as paperback originals. Thompson also wrote two screenplays (for the Stanley Kubrick films “The Killing” and “Paths of Glory”). An outstanding crime writer, the world of his fiction is rife with violence and corruption. In examining the underbelly of human experience and American society in particular, Thompson’s work at its best is both philosophical and experimental. Several of his novels have been filmed by American and French directors, resulting in classic noir including The Killer Inside Me (1952), After Dark My Sweet (1955), and The Grifters (1963).
