Brian Gardner explores the little-known military campaign that took place in East Africa during World War I. The book provides a detailed account of the battles fought between the British, German, and African forces, as well as the political and social context of the conflict. It also delves into the strange and unconventional tactics used by both sides, such as using camels and elephants for transport, and employing African warriors and mercenaries.
Gardner's book is based on extensive research and draws on first-hand accounts from soldiers and civilians who experienced the war in East Africa. The book not only provides a vivid picture of the military campaign, but also sheds light on the complex relationships between colonizers, colonized peoples, and the impact of war on African societies.
