Folding map printed in colours. 8vo, publisher’s original red cloth, the covers ruled in blind, the spine lettered in gilt. viii, 311, [17] ads pp. A nice copy of this classic boy's book, with little of the inner wear so typical to the book, the paper quite fine and fresh and clean, the map is in very nice shape, as are the hinges, the red cloth mellowed to burgundy on the spine and with a little wear at the tips. FIRST EDITION AND THE FIRST AND EARLIEST ISSUE AND IN THE PUBLISHER’S ORIGINAL CLOTH. One of the author’s best books and often considered a companion to TREASURE ISLAND as well as to CATRIONA which was published in 1893. The novel has attracted the praise and admiration of writers as diverse as Henry James, Jorge Luis Borges, and Hilary Mantel. The story is set around real 18th-century Scottish events, notably the "Appin murder", which occurred in the aftermath of the Jacobite rising of 1745. Many of the characters are real people, including one of the principals, Alan Breck Stewart. The political situation of the time is portrayed from multiple viewpoints, and the Scottish Highlanders are treated sympathetically.
