About This Item

New York, NY: Friends of Haiti, 1976. Book. Near Fine. No Binding. 1st Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Offered is a flyer headlined "KENNECOTT-HAITI" (no date, although 1976) issued by the Friends of Haiti out of New York City. A single-sheet mimeographed handbill, as issued, printed on one side and measuring 8-1/2" by 14". In two columns (the left column in English, the right column in Spanish), this handbill was distributed at the July 4th Coalition's March and Rally on July 4, 1976 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With an illustration showing Haiti with a "FOR SALE" sign, the text reads, in part, "Kennecott Copper is now in the process of exploiting what may be one of the largest copper deposits in the world located on Haiti's north coast. In addition, hundreds of factories have flocked to Haiti to take advantage of wage levels of $1.00 to $1.30 A DAY. In order for this plunder of Haiti's resources to take place, the U.S. multinationals must have 'an environment suitable for investment' which is guaranteed by the U.S.-backed Duvalier dictatorship. Since the death of Francois 'Papa Doc' Duvalier, the U.S. has given over $60 million in direct economic and military aid to his son, Jean-Claude 'Baby Doc' Duvalier." Folded once horizontally..
