About This Item

First Ukrainian edition of this important work by Kautsky (1917), translated from the second German edition by Mykhailo Baran, and published during the short-lived Ukrainian People's Republic, which included the proclamation of an independent Ukrainian state on January 22, 1918, free of Russian Bolshevik influence. As indicated by the head of title, the book was published by the Ukrainian Social Democratic Labor Party (Ukrains'ka Sotsiial'-Demokratychna Robitnycha Partiia), which was central to the People's Republic with its blend of Marxism and national independence inspired by Kautsky and the Erfurt Program of the German Social Democratic Party. The book is also identified as volume four in a series of publications by the newspaper "Robitnycha Hazeta" (Workers Paper).

The translator, Mykhailo Baran (1884-1937) was a leading figure in the revolutionary movement in Western Ukraine, originally from the Ternopil Region. A member of the USDRP since 1903, he served with the Sich Riflemen during World War I and joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union following the February Revolution. He was repressed in 1933 and eventually executed in 1937.
