Barón Wilhelm Friedrich von Karwinsky (1780-1855) fue un naturalista Alemán, Que Vivió en Oaxaca y estudio numerosas especies, entre ellas los Agaves que más tarde llevarían su nombre, Agaves Karwinskii es decir: Cuishe, Madrecuishe y Tobaziche. Willem Friederich fue enviado a México en 1826, por la Sociedad Minera Germano- Americana de Dusseldorf y por el gobierno bávaro para hacer colecciones de objetos de Historia Natural. Permaneció cinco años, principalmente en Oaxaca, y envió a su país un número considerable de plantas vivas (especialmente Cactáceas y Agaves). En 1840 visitó otra vez México por cuenta del gobierno Ruso, con el mismo objeto, regresando á Munich en 1843, mientras que sus colecciones fueron enviadas a San Petersburgo.
