About This Item

Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1854., 1854. First edition. First edition. 12mo. Original blind-stamped cloth with spine title and floral decoration in gold gilt, viii, 256 pp., plus 4 pages of advertisements, preface, fold-out map. Edward E. Hale was a clergyman and served for many years. Among his numerous books he is most remembered for THE MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRY, published anonymously in the "Atlantic" magazine in 1863. He advises that the use of the "z" in the word "Kanzas" is preferred by him as the "z" sound is more accurate in pronouncing the state's name and the spelling with the "s" replacing the "z" is too "fashionable." An interesting and important history of the two territories before statehood. He discusses the discoverers of the regions, Indian tribes, rivers and valleys, military, trading and missionary posts, projected cities in Nebraska and Kansas, routes of travel, political history, and the Emigrant Aid Companies. The map of Kanzas and Nebraska is from the original surveys and is drawn and engraved for this volume. Light evidence on the front pastedown sheet of the removal of an old bookplate, else a very good tight and clean copy.
