Reading, PA: Published by the Author, 1889. Hardcover. Very Good Plus. FABULOUS early visual dictionary, bi-lingual in English and German, self-published in the late nineteenth-century. Quarto measuring 8 in. x 11 in. Red cloth-covered boards, with black lettering and an elaborate bright gilt design to front board. Same design reproduced, in blind, on rear board. 247 pp. total. A few stray marks on an otherwise near-fine set of bright red boards. Begins with English and German (Fraktur) pronouncing dictionaries, followed by 171 pp. with 12 detailed drawings (except the first page, which has only 11), each within an arched border, measuring 1.75 in. x 1.75 in., totalling 2051. 46-page secion of full definitions, arranged by page number; Alphabetical List of Important Inventions; Vocabulary of Words Necessary to be Known in English and German Conversation, divided by topic -- for example, phrases necessary when dealing with Hotel personnel, the Laundress, etc. etc.; German Proverbs; and finally, several Alphabetical Scripts.
