'Kangaroo' follows an English writer named Richard Lovat Somers on his visit to New South Wales. Some note this to be a semi-autobiographical novel as Lawrence visited Australia for three months with his life Frieda in 1922. It is also a novel that regards local fringe politics. Richard Aldington called Lawrence, one of the most original and interesting persons of his time. He is widely regarded as one of the most significant and influential writers of the 20th century. He became known for his controversial portrayals of sexuality, most notoriously in the novel Lady Chatterley's Lover. It was partly to avoid his public portrayal as a pornographer and partly on account of his delicate health that he returned to Italy, where he died in 1930. Soon after his death his reputation was rehabilitated. The influential critic F. R. Leavis insisted on his integrity and morality, and did much to place Lawrence's fiction within the great tradition of the English novel. Kangaroo explores themes of leadership that were later taken up in collections such as The Plumed Serpent and Fanny and Annie. It is cited as an influence on the Jindyworobak movement. Condition: In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light bumping to the head and tail of spine. A few light marks to the spine. Minor offsetting to the endpapers, and tidemarks to both pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and very clean. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.
