About This Item

London: Lawrence and Bullen, 1896. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 10" by 6.5". A. D. McCormick. A first edition copy of this travel work, which was the first book to enlighten the West about the Kafirs. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Ink inscription to the front free end paper. Illustrated with fifty-three plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Collated, complete. Sir George Scott Robertson was the first Victorian to travel into Kafiristan, and consequently this work, which recounts his experiences, was the first book to bring the culture of the Kafirs to a Western audience. It dispelled many popular beliefs concerning the customs and lineage of the Kafirs. Though Robertson's style and perspective is now somewhat outdated, this volume is still valuable as one of the few descriptions of the Kafirs' way of life prior to their mass conversion by Amir Abdur Rahman Khan of Afghanistan. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally smart, with just a couple of small marks to the boards and some fading to the spine. Small tear to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Marginal age toning to pages which are mostly clean, apart from the odd spot to the first and last couple of pages. Very Good
