About This Item

JUSTINE Folio Society. Fine in a Fine slipcase. Folio Society, New York 2008 Hardcover. First Edition; First Printing

Justine, first published in 1957, is the first volume in Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet. Justine is one of four interlocking novels which each tell various aspects of a complex story of passion and deception from various points of view. The quartet is set in the Egyptian city of Alexandria of the 1930s and 1940s, and the city itself becomes as much of a complex character as the human protagonists.

At head of title :"Volume one of the Alexandria Quartet"

" All four volumes of The Alexandria Quartet were published together in 1962 by Faber & Faber in a revised edition. This edition follows the text of the 1962 revised edition, with minor emendations, and is published by arrangment with Faber & Faber and the Estate of Lawrence Durrell" -- title page verso. Printed on Caxton Wove paper at L.E.G.O. SpA, Vicenza, Italy. Bound by them in three-quarter cloth with front board printed with a photomontage; coloured endpapers.

Synopsis

The time is the eve of the World War II. The place is Alexandria, an Egyptian city that once housed the world's greatest library and whose inhabitants are dedicated to knowledge. But for the obsessed characters in this mesmerizing novel, their pursuits lead only to bedrooms in which each seeks to know—and possess—the other. Since its publication in 1957, Justine has inspired an almost religious devotion among readers and critics alike.
