About This Item

The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:

Janwillem van de Wetering A Dutch writer who wrote both in Dutch and English, van deWetering was the author of 16 mysteries, four nonfiction books, three children's books and one collection of shorts. His mysteries were all in the Grijpstra - de Gier series, taking place in or near Amsterdam. Van deWetering died in 2008. This is the twelfth book in the above mentioned series.

William Harrington: Prior to dying of suicide in 2000, Harrington wrote his own obituary, wherein he claimed to have been the ghost writer under the names of Harold Robbins and Margaret Truman. Outside of those books, Harrington wrote six Columbo novels, seventeen stand alone novels and one nonfiction book on crime. He also published a collaboration with Eleanor Roosevelt. This was his second Colombo novel.

Catherine Aird: Author of 26 novels and two short story collections, Aird's main focus has been the Sloan and Crosby series, accounting for all but one novel and one of the two collections. She released her most recent addition to the series in 2019, at age 89. This is the fourteenth novel in the Sloan and Crosby series.

Synopsis

Janwillem van de Wetering (1931–2008) was born and raised in Rotterdam, but lived most recently in Surry, Maine. He served as a member of the Amsterdam Special Constabulary and was once a Zen Buddhist monk. He is renowned for his detective fiction, including Outsider in Amsterdam , The Corpse on the Dike , The Japanese Corpse , and eleven other books in the Grijpstra and de Gier series.
