About This Item

Mannheim: J. Bensheimer, 1891. First edition. First edition. [ii], xvi, 280 pp. with 27 tissue-guarded plates. Bound in contemporary half red morocco over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. Text in German. Boards chipped along edges, bumped corners and a few spots of wear to leather, contents Near Fine and bright with very little foxing. Uncommon in such nice shape.

The Austrian writer Sacher-Masoch's profusely-illustrated, sentimental portrait of the Jewish people in Europe, their customs and culture. His erotic novel Venus in Furs inspired the term "masochism," which he did not approve of.
