About This Item

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1989. First edition. Fine in a fine jacket.. Inscribed first printing of this intergenerational novel built upon the game of mahjong, following the lives of Chinese-American women in San Francisco - a beautiful copy. Tan explores mother-daughter relationships, communities of women, the experiences of Mandarin Chinese immigrants, and the struggles of their second-generation children. The women's lives weave in and out of the structure of their mahjong club, which also plays a role in the thematic elements of the novel. 9'' x 6''. Original quarter dark green paper, lighter green paper boards, gilt-stamped vignette on front board, gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($18.95) color pictorial dust jacket with illustration by Gretchen Schields. Green endpapers. 288 pages. Inscribed by Tan on title page: "Joy + luck! / Amy Tan / 21 April 1991 / Denver." Very shallow, faint crease to front flap, close inspection only. Trace shelfwear to book extremities. Minor toning to pages, as common. Else bright, sharp, and clean.
