About This Item

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1907. Two octavo volumes. xi, 281; 284 pages; top-edge gilt. Bound in publisher's dark blue navy cloth. Trifle wear at the foot of each spine; corner portion of front free endpaper with expert tissue mend and light wrinkling. A clean and bright example and very good or better.

"In this book Olmsted revealed that he considered slavery a very undesirable institution, although he cautioned against immediate abolition. Since this was the last of his travel books, he seemed to desire to point out that he no longer had any illusions about the South and slavery [...] One of the outstanding features of the book is the author's attempt to compare and contrast the various social classes of the North and South." (Clark)
