About This Item

London: Rudolph Ackermann, 1821. First Edition. Near fine. Thomas Rowlandson (1757 - 1827). 8vo, 9 5/16 x 6 in. (245 x 155 mm); pp. tile page + ii + 291 + [1] + 18 bound-in hand-colored aquatint plates from designs by T. Rowlandson (although the title page calls for only 17 engravings this copy contains 18, as called for in the list of "Directions to the Binder"). Each plate bears the imprint, Pubd. at R. Ackerman's Repository of Arts No. 101 Strand date 1820 or 1821. Printed on cream wove paper, light foxing on front pages and versos of some engravings, some plate offsetting, else clean and bright. Later three quarter red mottled calf binding by Riviere with gilt fillets on corner and spine pieces, marbled cloth, five raised bands with gilt compartments, black morocco title labels, marbled end-papers, t.e.g., slight wear to joints and corners.

[Tooley 415; Abbey Travel 89; ]. A complete specimen (with advertisement at end) of this humorous and engaging social and political satire just before the French Revolution. The 18 colored plates are by English artist and caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827). Rowlandson is known for his political satire and social observation. He was a prolific printmaker, and illustrated many novels, humorous books, and topographical works. Like other caricaturists of the Georgian Era (Gillray, Cruikshank), his caricatures are often robust or bawdy.
