Shaw et Shoemaker, 39485. 7th year of James Madison's presidency. Much of the major legislation dealt with issues related to the War of 1812. Maj. General Jackson was given a large land grant for his service. Additional Acts dealt with an important treaty with the Cherokee tribe; Yazoo claimants (from the land speculation affair); issues in Mississippi, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, New Orleans; planning for a new capital (the previous one had been burned by the British in 1814); Indiana Statehood (Dec. 11), national transportation improvements (proposed by then nationalist John Calhoun); the authorization of the Second Bank of the United States; and a new tariff.
