First Editions. Vols. 1-8 octavo Vols. 9-55 in a large octavo, uniformly bound in black buckram with gilt spine titles. The 8 plate volumes are in folio. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographic plates, engravings, drawings, maps, folding maps, and black and white and color plates and chromos (some plates folding). Volume three is in original leather spine over brick red pebbled cloth covered boards. An excellent set, tight, and internally clean and without damage. Very gently ex-library with simple bookplate on pastedown and perforation to title page with withdrawal stamp, number stamp and a few pencil notations. Most volumes have NO marks after the contents page and there are absolutely NO card pockets or other insertions. Exteriors dusty. Occasional dust or finger smudge to margins. A notably well-preserved set and quite rare to have the initial run with all of the plate volumes and NO REPRINTS. An important source work for classics research. SCARCE.. 1st Edition. Hardcover.
