Small leather spine label, perhaps from original binding, with "acKinzie [and] Iceland." Cover are rubbed and show general light wear. Moisture stain along outside edge of last 20 leaves. Four inch closed tear in folding map from bound edge into border but not affecting any other part of image. Scattered, mostly light, foxing, though a little heavier on title page. Volume remains tight and complete, and contents have been collated.

Smit, G. H. Ford, and A. G. Butler. These include 21 bird plates after Smit and four butterfly plates after Butler. The remaining plates are after Ford, and include four reptile plates (uncolored), ten fish plates (five are uncolored), seven shell plates and three insect plates. Of the natural history plates, all but nine of Ford's reptile plates are hand colored. Folding map at rear, preceding index. All plates except the frontispiece remain tissue guarded. Green cloth over beveled boards with gilt lettering and decoration. Rebacked, retaining most of cloth spine covers. Cloth is rubbed, and shows some wear at corners. Top hinge is cracked and a little loose. First few leaves with foxing, affecting some of the folding frontis plate, and title page at gutter. Front free end leaf and half title page show chips along upper edge, and ffep with previous penciled dealer notes. Plates are generally very good, but are a little darkened along edges. Later rebind with tan colored cloth somewhat matching the older leather over corners. Older marbled paper over boards. Original leather spine label is affixed, being chipped but with clear gilt stamped lettering. Folding frontispiece illustration and folding map remain very good. There is a moisture stain/tide mark seen at the lower outside corner of most of the contents. This affect most of the plates, some more than others. It does touch the image of a few plates, but is mostly in the blank space. Outside edge of leaves are thumbed, and there is some chipping on the edges of a few leaves. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
