_______________

The first English Edition of Josephus was printed in 1602.

A controversial figure, Josephus remains undeniably important in history, literature and the arts. His historical works—The Jewish War, Antiquities of the Jews, Against Apion and his autobiography or Apologia— are "among the most valuable sources for the study of early Judaism and early Christianity" (Columbia University Press).
"Without [these writings] little would have been known of the history of the Second Temple nor would it have been possible to write such a history… In point of literary talent Josephus ranks among the leading writers in world literature. His style is epic, his portrayals plastic, his gift of description captivates the reader alike by its fidelity and its colorful presentation" (Encyclopedia Judaica).
Thomas Lodge, was the first to publish the writings of Josephus in English, in 1602.

The first printed Latin Edition edition of Josephus was published by Johann Schussler in Augsburg, printed in 1470. (The first printed book ever was the Gutenberg Bible printed in 1455.)

The first printed Greek Edition of Josephus was published by Frobenius and Episcopius (Basel, printed in 1544).

The first English translation, by Thomas Lodge, appeared in 1602, with subsequent editions appearing throughout the 17th century.

Classical Authors: Haganoae Iohannem Secerium March 1530. [4], 106 Bl ; 142. 2° Woodcut initials and headpieces. Titles preceded by vine-ornament Text in Greek and Latin; each part separately foliated. Editio princeps of the first 5 books, the only fully preserved portion of Polybius's history of the rise of the Roman empire from 220 to 146 B.C.; books 6-40 survive in fragmentary form. The revival of interest in the study of Polybius was due to Pope Nicholas V (1447-1455), the founder of the Vatican Library. Soon after his election he seems to have urged Cardinal Perotti to undertake a Latin translation of the five books then known to exist. On the 3d of January 1454 the Pope writes again to Perotti thanking him for the third book; and in a letter to Torelli, dated 13th November 1453, Perotti says that he had finished his translation of Polybius in the preceding September. This translation was first printed in 1473. The Greek text was not printed till this edition in 1530, the first five books in… Read More

[5 of 6]+132 leaves with several armorial engravings. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in half leather with four raised spine bands with black label to spine in gilt lettering over marbled boards. (Medina, Mexico 594; Palau 44870 ("actualmente rarísima"); Sabin 10953) First edition. Horacio Carochi (1586-1666) was a Jesuit priest and grammarian who was born in Florence and died in Mexico. He is known for his grammar of the Classical Nahuatl language. He went to Rome where he entered the Society of Jesus. From Rome he went to the New World, arriving in New Spain (now Mexico). There he dedicated himself to the study of the indigenous languages and became proficient in Otomi and then in Nahuatl. He was a friend of the Bishop and later Viceroy of New Spain, Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, as is documented by surviving letters written by Carochi to the bishop. Carochi had an acute understanding of the Nahuatl language and was the first grammarian to understand and propose a consistent transcription of two… Read More

London: George Sawbridge, 1674 pp (22) + 107 + 183-429 . In addition to the frontispiece there are five folding plates. This copy is complete despite the jump in pagination after page 107 ; it corresponds with that in the British Library. Internally very good subject to moderate browning, some fraying to the fep and fairly inoffensive evidence of moisture to the edges of the first few leaves. Hinges cracked although binding still holding. Cover, which looks to be contemporary, rather worn. The boards scuffed with wear to the edges and corners. The ornate spine has significant wear to both extremities. Scans available.

Description:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Read More
