About This Item

New York: The Macmillan Company,, 1970. First edition, first printing, accompanied by a postcard inscribed by the author, "For Vic! Wishing you love always! From Richard Bach", loosely inserted. The postcard, stamped with the date 8 November 1985, was sent to Vic Von Marin of Idaho Falls from their friend Art Patience of Olympia, Washington, who writes: "Vic, He was delighted to hear about you. He had such a successful autograph session here that he said this was the best ever!... I have a feeling that Donnah and I will be knowing and working with he and his wife w/in the next few years". Jonathan Livingston Seagull was first serialized in 1967, where extracts of the unfinished manuscript were published in the aviation magazine Private Pilot. It was well received and subsequently sold to Macmillan, who agreed to publish the fable in book form on 31 August 1970. The print run sold out before Christmas, and subsequent printings were published in huge numbers. It reached the top of the New York Times Best Seller list in 1971 where it remained for 38 weeks, and by the end of 1972 over a million copies were in print. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in white, sides with blind-stamped seagull, photographic endpapers. With dust jacket. Photographic illustrations throughout, some double-page. Cloth bright, lean to spine, faint spots on endpapers, contents clean. A very good copy indeed, in near-fine dust jacket, unclipped, spine panel faintly sunned, pencil note to verso, bright and sharp.

Synopsis

Jonathan Livingston Seagull, written by Richard Bach, is a fable in novella form about a seagull learning about life and flight, and a homily about self-perfection. First published in 1970 as "Jonathan Livingston Seagull — a story", it became a favorite throughout the United States. By the end of 1972, over a million copies were in print, Reader's Digest had published a condensed version, and the book reached the top of the New York Times Best Seller list where it remained for 38 weeks.

Though the inspiring tale of one seagull who realises there is so much more to flying than most realise, this book puts beautifully into words and stunning pictures our largely untapped potential hidden within the gift of life.

awesome theme and awesome way of narrating the story!
