Book appears gently read, with concave spine and gentle rubbing to edges of the wraps. Faint odor and mild soiling to book, but no internal markings or major blemishes. A high spot of military literature, the gritty account of a recon platoon scouting an enemy position during WWII. Raoul Walsh directed the 1958 film of the same name starring Aldo Ray, Cliff Robertson and Raymond Massey. Additional photos available upon request. Very Good.

Spine with five raised bands, compartments lettered, ruled and decorated in gilt. Red title label, gilt. Single gilt ruled border to boards. Top edge gilt. A Fine copy of Bowles' influential first novel. Famously rejected by his American publishers, the London edition of The Sheltering Sky is the true first edition.

First published in 2 volumes octavo in 1735, and again in 1744, this is the first edition in quarto, considerably improved and enlarged, pp. viii, plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; engraved frontispiece and 15 engraved plates; 20th-century quarter green morocco, the spine a bit discolored, else very good. With the bookplate of Wm. D. Tarrant, almost certainly the same Tarrant as the mayor of Wichita 1965-67, and the Gun Dog Editor for Field & Stream, and twice named Dog Writer of the Year by the Dog Writers Association of America. Terminology is alphabetically arranged throughout. Alston XVIII-4, 146 (erroneously identified as an octavo).

"Louise: here is a peculiar little book which I was suppose (sic) to review but couldn't think of anything to say about -- which is not to say I didn't like it. But it left me baffled. A translation, by the artist, of Toye and Adair's, Drinks: Long & Short, originally issued in London in 1925. Much more than a translation, this beautiful re-imagining of the book, by one of France's most prolific and imaginative printmakers. In a custom binding, unsigned, with an original drawing for the design of the binding used as an endpaper. The binding is quarter black morocco, gilt-titled and decorated with ornaments in the shape of bunches of grapes. Some light foxing throughout. Original pochoir Art-Deco wrappers bound-in. The owner of the book, W.P. Dudley of Chicago, was a fixture on the Palm Beach social circuit, arriving for the opening of The Breakers. His name is gilt-stamped on the front board. Near Fine, apparently unread book that has softness at spine ends, slight bow to boards, and very light touch of foxing to front page edges; in a Good to Very Good dust jacket that has front flap that is about three quarters detached with a small tape repair to reverse, small chips along edges with color loss edges and front flap fold, wear and chipping to corners, mild sun and age toning to white portions, spine, and back flap, closed tear top front panel with a 4 inch triangular crease toward spine. The gold title labels and red top-stain are bright, and the title labels have also produced white offsetting to interior of jacket. A proper first with $2.00 price front flap, both Scribners "A" and imprint on copyright page, ow instead of two at p. 159 line 20. Six of the fourteen short stories appear here for the first time. First printing was just over 20,000 copies – all as per Grissom 2011 bibliography.
