Clean unfaded red leather-textured boards with black lettering on cover and spine. Very light surface wear to spine corners, no fraying. Binding is tight & square, no cracking. Pages and edges are clean, with clean red top-stained page edges. Previous owner name neatly penned at top edge of front free endpaper; no other marks. 309 pgs. Clean dustjacket is not price clipped, large portion of rear inside flap torn away; chipping to top spine edge and corner, very shallow chipping at base of spine, a few short closed edge tears; aside from the torn rear inside flap, still decent looking in new archival quality mylar cover. Joe, a young American soldier, is hit by a mortar shell on the last day of World War I. He lies in a hospital bed in a fate worse than death --- a quadruple amputee who has lost his arms, legs, eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to think, thereby reliving his life through strange dreams and memories, unable to distinguish whether he is awake or dreaming. He remains frustrated by his situation, until one day he discovers a unique way to communicate with his caregivers. A powerful anti-war document; also a powerful and brilliant work of the imagination. A book on war that can never be forgotten by anyone who ever reads it..
